Chicago the musical springs from the play of the same name by 1920s Chicago reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins. Watkins had covered the 1924 trials of lady-killers Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner for the Chicago Tribune, and was compelled to pen her drama after witnessing the darker machinations of the city's criminal justice administration.
Chicago the Musical tickets open up the world of vaudevillian Velma Kelly, who killed her husband and sister upon discovering them in bed together. She delivers the show's initial searing tune "All That Jazz", setting off what proves to be a very entertaining evening. Simultaneous to this, chorus girl Roxie Hart murders her lover, nightclubber Fred Casely, before convincing her unsuspecting husband that Casely was a burglar she'd disturbed.
